Defend the air, track aircraft by radar and use computers to identify them and to plot their speed and position.
Aerospace Systems Operators are defenders of the air, tracking aircraft by radar and using computers to identify them, plot their speed and determine their position. Join the RAF as an Aerospace Systems Operator and you’ll find yourself using some of the most advanced radar and computer systems in the world. You’ll also monitor aircraft, ships and ‘totes’ – electronic displays showing weather, shipping, aircraft or missile data. As your career progresses, you may have the chance to train as a Weapons Controller or Surveillance Operator and fly as a crew member on board the Sentry E-3D. The job involves communicating under pressure with a wide range of agencies so you’ll need a clear head and a clear voice.

Usual service: 9 years
Open to: men or women
Qualifications: 2 GCSEs/SCEs at grade C/3 minimum or equivalent in English language and maths
